All raw water contains microorganisms: bacteria, algae, fungi, viruses and other higher organisms. When the microorganisms in the feed water enter the reverse osmosis and nanofiltration systems, they will settle and condense on the surface of the membrane to form a biofilm, which will form a biological fouling when the biofilm reaches a certain thickness. The biological fouling of membrane elements will seriously affect the performance of the reverse osmosis system, and the pressure difference between the influent and the concentrated water will increase rapidly. Due to the barrier of the microbial membrane, the effective pressure of the system operation will also be reduced, resulting in a decrease in the system desalination rate.

 

Characteristics of reverse osmosis membrane biofouling

The biofouling of reverse osmosis membranes is difficult to thoroughly clean mainly because the content of microorganisms including bacteria, algae, fungi and their viruses in water is very large and grows rapidly. Once a bacterial community appears on the membrane surface, a slime film will soon be formed. At the same time, the biological slime film is insoluble in acid and insoluble in alkali, and cannot be easily removed even if it is frequently washed with cement. However, if the biological fouling of the reverse osmosis membrane is not cleaned in time, it will easily cause the system inlet water pressure to increase, the pressure difference to increase, and the water production to decrease. Generally speaking, the first reverse osmosis membrane is seriously polluted by organisms, and the membrane surface and flow channel pollution will occur at the same time.
